What is a rose cut diamond?

We are often asked this question! We are here to share exactly what a rose cut diamond is, and why we love to use this cut in our Sethi Couture designs.

First things first, the "rose" nomenclature refers to the cut of the diamond, not its shape. The rose cut is considered one of the oldest diamond cuts, and so is notably present in antique and vintage jewelry. Rose cut diamonds resemble the unfurling of their floral namesake, and were traditionally cut by hand to dazzle romantically under candlelight. Rose cuts are characterized by a curved dome with anywhere from 3 to 24 facets, and a flat base. The flat base acts as a window for light to shine up through the faceted dome, resulting in an ethereal glow. Of course, we must mention that the style and technique of cutting a rose cut diamond is believed to have been developed in India... in the 15th century!

Rose cut diamonds shine differently than other cuts of diamonds, for a number of reasons...

  1. Fewer facets. Since there are fewer facets, rose cut diamonds glow radiantly from within, emitting a subtle sparkle rather than the intense shine of brilliant cut diamonds. This softer touch lends itself to a more understated diamond look.
  2. Larger surface area. The dome shape mentioned earlier results in a larger surface area, meaning rose cut diamonds appear larger for less weight than brilliant cut diamonds.
  3. Shape, color and stone variety. Rose cut diamonds come in a number of shapes and colors: pear, marquise, round, oval and irregular shapes, in a full range of natural diamond colors such as champagne, yellow, orange, green, and opaque colors, as demonstrated above in our P.S. Multi-Color Diamond Long Tag Pendant. Finally, the rose cut is not exclusive to diamonds but can also be a cut for sapphires and other precious and semi-precious stones.

Why do we love working with rose cut diamonds?

We love using rose cut diamonds across all of our Sethi Couture stacking rings, earrings, necklaces, charms and pendants.

When creating a ring stack, a rose cut diamond band can act effortlessly as the foundation for a unique look, framed with accents of brilliant cut diamond bands for dimension in sparkle and glow. Variety in shape weaves in another layer of storytelling, seen below the pear shape rose cuts of our Fine Vine White Diamond Band and the round rose cuts of our Scroll White Diamond Band.
